Product manager interview questions

Product management is mostly judgement: what to build, what not to build, and how to bring people along. A recorded first round works well because it shows how a candidate structures a messy problem when they have a minute to think.

10 questions for a product manager first round

Pick three to five that fit your role, rather than all ten: a short first round gets more finished interviews. All ten together take about 24 minutes to record. The time limits suit a one-way video interview, where each answer is recorded once.

  1. 1

Tell us about a product decision you made that you’re proud of. What did you decide, and how?

Listen for: A real choice between options, the evidence they used and the outcome. The best answers name what they decided against.

  2. 2

How do you decide what goes into the next release when everything feels urgent?

Listen for: A repeatable way of weighing value against effort and risk, and an example of applying it, not a framework name alone.

  3. 3

Describe a time you said no to a senior stakeholder. How did it go?

Listen for: Respect for the stakeholder’s goal, an alternative they offered, and a relationship that survived the no.

  4. 4

Tell us about a feature that didn’t do what you expected. What did you learn?

Listen for: That they measured it, admitted it underperformed and changed something because of it.

    3 min to answer
  5. 5

How do you work with engineers and designers day to day?

Listen for: Shared ownership of the problem rather than handing over a specification, and an example of a disagreement resolved well.

    2 min to answer
  6. 6

How do you find out what customers actually need, rather than what they ask for?

Listen for: Direct contact with customers, questions about the problem behind a request, and use of behaviour data as well as opinions.

    2 min to answer
  7. 7

What metric would you watch for a product you’ve worked on, and why that one?

Listen for: A metric tied to customer value, an understanding of how it can mislead, and what they would do if it moved.

    2 min to answer
  8. 8

Describe a time you had to make a decision without enough information.

Listen for: A sensible bet with a way to check it quickly, rather than waiting for certainty or guessing blindly.

    2 min to answer
  9. 9

How do you keep the rest of the company up to date on what the product team is doing?

Listen for: Regular, honest communication suited to each audience, including bad news.

    2 min to answer
  10. 10

Why this role, and what would you want to understand in your first month?

Listen for: Interest in your customers and your product specifically, and a plan to listen before changing things.
